Dance
"Dance is your pulse, your heartbeat, your breathing. It’s the rhythm of your life. It’s the expression of time and movement, in happiness joy, saddened and envy" Jacques D’Amboise.
My dance photography: I have had the privilege of photographing dancers and students since 1988, as a result of wanting to improve and develop my technique as a photographer. From this time I have been in awe of the extraordinary physical expressions that choreographers create and dancers execute. My dance photography is about the transformation of the person through the power of the combined art of dance and photography a way to communicate those expressions in a new way to an audience.
My dance photography has many influences, but I owe most to Margaret Wake-Arruda. She is an exceptional teacher who used to be based in the WA Great Southern town of Katanning. Over a 14 year period she guided and educated me in the art of dance. Through this association I learnt to understand and capture the peak moment and the quiet beauty of working collaboratively with the dancer, choreographer and teacher, drawing on unique experience and shared vocabulary. One of my greatest joys is working with dancers and companies of a wide range of experience. I love it when a dancer executes a difficult move, and my biggest kick is when I show a dancer a photograph we just shot, and they say "I did that". My dance photography has been exhibited all around the world and published in a national magazine and I strive to continue to produce photographs of excellence.
I cannot finish this without saying thank you to all the dancers, teachers and choreographers (past, present and future) who have worked so hard to create this work. Lastly I convey a big thank you to Margaret (Wake) Arruda who introduced me to the art of dance. The passion still burns twenty years later.
